As one of the latest additions to Mississippi's Hometown Retirement program, Southaven's senior citizen growth is exceeding DeSoto County's record setting growth by almost 3 to 1. Persons over 65 made up 8.7% of the county's population in 1995.

In Southaven, you can live it up with your hard-earned retirement income instead of paying it out for day-to-day living expenses. You can take what you save on housing, utilities, health care and taxes and spend it on recreation, travel or investments. According to the American Chamber of Commerce Research Association, the average cost of living in Mississippi is 10% below the national average, and the average cost of housing is 24% below the national average.

In addition to low tax rates in general, retirees living in Mississippi benefit from additional tax breaks. Social Security is not taxed, regardless of total income. Retirement income from IRAs, 401s/403s, Keoghs and qualified public and private pension plans is not taxable. Interest income from federal securities and obligations of Mississippi and its political subdivisions are all exempt.
